The obvious solution is to upgrade to version 15 if this is the case, however if I buy 15 now, and another update happens in a few months time that breaks it again, and 15 has been succeeded by version 16, I could have to upgrade twice in the matter of a few months. 10 months later this issue was reported, but no fix has been presented.

That's at least how it appears at the moment because for those who purchased VMWare in June 2018 - they would have gotten VMWare 14. My main concern is that this currently indicates that someone could purchase a version of VMWare and less than 12 months later it is no longer supported or patched.
